This award-winning centre in Bishop’s Stortford, built in 2010, accommodates the needs of both St Joseph’s Catholic Church and our own St Michael’s Church.  It marks a milestone in inter-denominational co-operation: providing two large open hall spaces for 90 people, each with their own kitchen, smaller rooms for group activities and office accommodation, for the use of both churches.

The design meets the precise requirements of the two churches: respecting and enhancing the views of the building from the many adjacent vantage points with contemporary external elevations incorporating full height glazing and horizontal solar shading.  This gives the building a modern and contemporary look and feel, whilst ensuring that the building benefits from the glorious views of the parkland to the south, including St Michael’s churchyard and ancient yew trees, and the Monastery Gardens to the north.

Timber plays a large part in the design and construction of the centre – from the areas of cedar cladding and the green oak cloistered approach, to the large beams that support the contrasting planes of the roofs.  As such, the building complements and enhances its surrounding environment amidst the trees.

The WCC is fully accessible to elderly and disabled visitors – as is the external access, with shallow ramps and an externally accessed lift that serves all levels of the building.

It is available for event hire for those with a link to St Michael’s or St Joseph’s Churches, or by non-profit making organisations, or for educational use.
